DEFINITION

The ER Clerk is a member of the Business Office who primarily performs various clerical, receptionist, and communication duties in the emergency room admitting area.

JOB ESSENTIALS

  • Admit all patients who are in need of emergency medical care through the emergency room.
  • Admit and discharge all outpatients/inpatients that come through the emergency room during times when the Admissions and Business Office are closed.
  • Take completed ER admissions to the Business Office.
  • Remain in the ER admitting office at all times, except in the case of a hospital emergency.
  • Answer the ambulance phone in the ER.
  • Make "On Call" schedule daily.
  • Set up ER Charts with the following: Nurses notes, physicians notes, follow up instruction sheet, and charge sheet.
  • Look over all charts and check for accuracy.
  • Enter patients in the ER Register.
  • During a "CODE" call the laboratory, radiology and respiratory therapy departments to the ER.
  • Records events as they happen if there is no one available to do so.
  • Keep adequate supply of nurses notes, physicians notes, admitting forms and all other forms required in the ER.
  • Fill out charge slips daily and deliver to computer room.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school or equivalent
  • 3 months experience in a hospital setting

Preferred Requirements

  • 2 years’ experience in a healthcare setting.

Physical Requirements

Perceive the nature of sounds by the ear, express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word, perceive characteristics of objects through the eyes, extend arms and hands in any direction, seize, hold, grasp, turn, or otherwise work with hands, pick, pinch, or otherwise work with fingers, perceive such attributes of objects or materials as size, shape, temperature, or texture; and stoop, kneel crouch, and crawl. Must be able to lift 25 pounds maximum with frequent lifting, carrying pushing, and pulling of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Continuous sitting. Must be able to identify, match, and distinguish colors.
