DEFINITION

Responsible for planning, organizing and directing the overall operation of Pharmacy Services; ensures compliance with patient care quality standards as it relates to the care provided to all age groups of patients; directs and controls the purchase and inventory maintenance of pharmaceuticals and related substances and supplies; participates in the department’s planning, revenue analysis, budgeting, education and human resources activities.

JOB ESSENTIALS

  • Attends alll review and department inservices, as scheduled.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department.
  • Prepares department budget for staff, operating expenses and capital equipment. Responsible for fiscal operation of the department.
  • Works in the community to bring positive attention to the effective patient care that the hospital provides.
  • Maintains a system of records in accordance with hospital policy for recording patient charges as well as maintaining adequate controls over requisitioning and dispensing of pharmaceuticals.
  • Maintains formularies, information resources and references for preparations.
  • Responsible for the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of performance improvement and CQI activities assigned to Pharmacy Services.
  • Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts and draws valid conclusions.
  • Interprets an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract variables.
  • Applies necessary advanced mathematical concepts, such as exponents and logarithms.
  • Applies mathematical operations to such tasks as dosage calculations, formulation of pharmaceutical preparations and data analysis.
  • Reads, analyzes and interprets pharmacy-related journals.
  • Responds to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the hospital staff.
  • Writes articles for publication and to effectively present information to management, medical staff, hospital staff and public groups is essential.
  • Responsible for overseeing compounding activities; determines the risk levels of CSPs prepared in the facility.
  • Establishes regulations for preparation of intravenous medications throughout the hospital.
  • Assures the availability of adequate equipment to safely prepare compounded sterile preparations.
  • Ensures that pharmaceutical preparations are sterile, properly packaged, labeled, stored and not outdated.
  • Certifies the skills of the compounding staff.
  • Maintains air quality check records.
  • Low-risk compounding:
  • Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
  • Completes annual education requirements.
  • Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including all federal, state, local regulations and accrediting organization standards.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Wears identification while on duty.
  • Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments and staff.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Attends committee, CQI and management meetings, as appropriate.
  • Resolves staff concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the grievance process as required.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire safety, emergency management and infection prevention and control.
  • Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directive to staff and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.

Minimum Requirements

  • Doctorate of Pharmacy degree.
  • Graduate from accredited School of Pharmacy.
  • Current Pharmacist certification or licensure in the State of Idaho.
  • Education in all age groups ranging from newborn to the geriatric population obtained either in school education, experience or subsequent training.
  • Qualified to obtain controlled substance license.
  • Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.
  • Current knowledge of state and federal regulations and statutes regarding the practice of pharmacy and the distribution of approved drugs, controlled substances, and investigational agents.
  • 3 years progressive management experience as a pharmacist.

Preferred Requirements

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • 5 year’s progressive manager experience in pharmacy in a healthcare setting.

Physical Requirements

Perceive the nature of sounds by the ear, express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word, perceive characteristics of objects through the eyes, extend arms and hands in any direction, seize, hold, grasp, turn, or otherwise work with hands, pick, pinch, or otherwise work with fingers, perceive such attributes of objects or materials as size, shape, temperature, or texture; and stoop, kneel crouch, and crawl. Must be able to lift 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting, carrying pushing, and pulling of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Continuous walking and standing. Must be able to identify, match, and distinguish colors.
