Description

DEFINITION
An advanced EMT-A is a certified individual, employed by a hospital and/or institution, who is responsible for the pre-hospital and intra-hospital care.

JOB ESSENTIALS
The Advanced EMT-A is responsible on a shift to shift and on-call basis for the pre-hospital and general patient care provided under the guidelines of hospital policy. The areas of responsibility are divided into four functional areas:

  1. Pre-hospital patient care and transport.
  2. Administrative assignments
  3. Educational/Developmental/Licensure responsibilities.
  4. Intra-hospital responsibilities, transport and other duties.

 

  1. PRE-HOSPITAL PATEINT CARE AND TRANSPORT
  1. Responds via ambulance in a safe, expedient, and efficient manner to the scene or location of injured and/or sick patient.
  2. Provides direct patient care after evaluating the scene, by assessing the needs of individual patients, and treating the patient(s) appropriately.
  3. Provides direct patient care in accordance with the laws governing Idaho Advanced EMT-A’s, with the standards set by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Idaho Emergency Medical Services Bureau, Idaho State Board of Medicine, Minidoka Memorial Hospital Medical Control Physicians and Minidoka Memorial Hospital Policies and Procedures manual.
  4. Assures that medical treatment provided, as it relates to the pre-hospital setting and during transports is properly implemented, evaluated and documented.
  5. Adheres to the criteria for use of standing written orders as set up by the Medical Control Physician of Minidoka Memorial Hospital
  6. Assures that the proper communication, via two-way radio is carried out with the Emergency Room Physician, Emergency Department, State Communications Center, other hospitals, appropriate law enforcement agencies and/or other appropriate public service agencies and/or units.
  7. Assures that the ambulance is driven at all times in a safe manner and in accordance with the laws governing the operation of Emergency Vehicles in the State of Idaho and the Emergency Driving Standards in the policy and procedures manual.
  8. Assures that the ambulances are stocked, cleaned, and ready for use at all times.

 

  1. ADMINISTRATIVE AREA
  1. Responsible to follow personnel and staffing policies as they relate to him/her.
  2. Responsible to participate in evaluations pertinent to the area of practice as they relate to Quality Assurance.
  3. Responsible to provide feedback to the shift supervisor on needs of the service and current program.
  4. Responsible to control use of supplies and equipment by ensuring that the correct and appropriate billing system is completed after each ambulance call.
  5. Completes other job related duties as necessary and/or other assigned duties per director or request of shift supervisor, shift RN, or Physician.
  6. Maintains a safe environment for patients, bystanders, visitors, and other personnel.
  7. Know and understands specific responsibilities of his/herself and staff in the event of fire (Code 70), Disaster (Code 0), cardiopulmonary arrest (code blue).
  8. Demonstrates professional and ethical conduct as established by Minidoka Memorial Hospital policy and the U.S. Department of Transportation standards and ethics for the Emergency Medical Technicians.

 

  1. EDUCATIONAL/DEVELOPMENTAL/LICENSURE RESPONSIBLITIES
  1. Responsible to evaluate self-educational needs on an ongoing basis and seek those resources to met those needs.
  2. Responsible to work in conjunction with shift supervisor to identify programs which would meet staff needs.
  3. Required to attend mandatory inservices provided yearly for fire safety, body mechanics, infection control, electrical hazards, B.C.L.S., and other deemed mandatory by administration or ambulance department.
  4. Required to attend six department staff meetings yearly.
  5. Required to attend quarterly advanced EMT-A meetings.
  6. Required to meet the minimum continuing education hours and perform the minimum skills required (i.e. IV’s, esophageal obturator airway intubations, Medical Anti-Shock Trousers application) monthly defibs per the advanced EMT-A Physician Director, Idaho State Board of Medicine and Idaho EMS Bureau.
  7. Responsible to maintain advanced EMT-A certification, by meeting the minimum requirements for continued certification and re-certification.
  8. Required to be in excellent physical condition without limitation and stable emotional health.

 

  1. INTRA-HOSPITAL RESPONSIBLITIES, TRANSPORT AND OTHER DUTIES

 

FIRST PRIORITY IS TO THE AMBULANCE TO MAKE SURE IT IS STOCKED AND MAINTAINED.

  1. Responds to calls on hospital pager of fire department pager frequencies as a first priority.
  2. Completes job-related duties as assigned by the department supervisor and/or charge nurse.
  3. Assists nurses in taking vital signs and documentation of same within the hospital, to include ECF.
  1. Start unmedicated intravenous fluids under direct supervision of physician or RN within the hospital with accurate documentation of same, as agreed upon in the written contract between the hospital and EMS.
  2. Fill out ER records if ward clerk is busy with many patients and may complete requisitions for tests.
  3. Assist in assessment of patient in emergency department with documentation on ER record, in accordance with emergency room policies and scope of practice, e.g., information regarding complaint, vital signs, and observations, however, the RN must still make an entry in the record or his/her assessment.
  1. Transports patients by wheelchair and stretcher to and from departments within the hospital, to include ECF (unless an obvious priority exists).
  2. Assists nurses in getting non-ambulatory patients to and from bed, chairs, wheelchairs, and stretchers, to include ECF. This is done in conjunction with an employee of that department.
  3. Obtains supplies and equipment, etc., when under the direction of the department supervisor and/or shift RN.
  4. Reports identified intra-departmental problems to the RN.
  5. Assigned duties may be subject to change. All revisions will be documented in Minidoka Memorial Hospital policy and procedure manuals and copies given to all Advanced EMT-A personnel.
  6. Required to be in base headquarters or within the hospital area when on duty. If duty assignment requires being outside of hospital area, alert appropriate personnel of that location.
  7. Participates as a member of the CPR team in a code situation within the hospital, to include ECF.
  8. Performs above and other related duties.

 

  1. UNIFORMS
  1. A uniform that is professional looking and clean will be worn while on duty in the hospital.
  2. In pre-hospital settings weather conditions may modify need for other than stated designated uniforms.
  3. Uniforms shall be approved by the Director of Ambulance to assure uniformity.

Minimum Requirements

  • Currently certified as an advanced EMT-A

  • Able to act as supervisor of the pre-hospital care given when working with Basic EMTs.

  • 1 years’ experience in the pre-hospital setting and care entities involved.

  • Current Idaho driver’s license and in good standing with the State of Idaho.

  • All personnel currently employed, and for future employment, will consent to authorization to release driver’s record information.

  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification.

Preferred Requirements

  • 3 or more years’ experience in the pre-hospital setting and care entities involved.

Physical Requirements

  • Carrying over 100 pounds, Hearing/Listening, Lifting over 100 pounds, Manual Dexterity, Pushing/Pulling over 100 pounds, Seeing, Speaking, Standing, and Walking.
