Job Summary

Drive ambulance or assist in transporting sick, injured or convalescent persons.
 

Duties and Responsibilities

PRE-HOSPTIAL PATIENT CARE, DOCUMENTATION, AND TRANSPORT

  • Remove and replace soiled linens or equipment to maintain sanitary conditions.
  • Drive ambulances or assist ambulance drivers in transporting sick, injured, or convalescent persons.
  • Responds via ambulance in a safe, expedient, and efficient manner to the scene or location of injured and/or sick patient(s).
  • Report facts concerning accidents or emergencies to hospital personnel or law enforcement officials.
  • Assists other crew members in patient(s) care after evaluating the scene, by assessing the needs of individual patients, and treating the patient(s) appropriately.
  • Place patients on stretchers and load stretchers into ambulances, usually with assistance from other attendants.
  • Accompany and assist emergency medical technicians on calls.
  • Assures that the ambulance is driven in a safe manner and in accordance with the laws governing the operation of Emergency Vehicles in the State of Idaho and the Emergency Driving Standards in the policy and procedures manual.
  • Replace supplies and disposable items on ambulances.
  • Perform minor maintenance on emergency medical services vehicles, such as ambulances.
  • Assures that the ambulances are stocked, cleaned, and ready for use at all times.
  • Clean and wash rigs, ambulances, or equipment.
  • Adheres to the criteria for use of written standing orders as set up by the Medical Control Physician of Minidoka Memorial Hospital.
  • Assures that the proper communication, via two-way radio or cell phone, is carried out with the Emergency Room Physician, Emergency Department, State Communication Center, other hospitals, law enforcement agencies and/or other appropriate public service agencies.
  • Earn and maintain appropriate certifications.
  • Administer first aid, such as bandaging, splinting, or administering oxygen.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Actively engage in quality improvement activities.
  • Restrain or shackle violent patients.

Minimum Requirements

  • Certified as an EMT 2011 or EMR (Emergency Medical Responder) and provides that certification, at the time of hire, to the Director of Ambulance.
  • Required to meet the minimum continuing education hours for state licensure, and perform the annual and semi-annual skills as required by Idaho EMS Bureau.
  • Knowledgeable in the pre-hospital setting and care entities involved.
  • Has a current Idaho driver’s license and is in good standing with the State of Idaho.

Preferred Requirements

  • 2-3 years of relevant experience

Skills/Competencies

  • Responsible to evaluate self-educational needs on an ongoing basis and seek those resources to meet those needs.
  • Responsible to maintain EMT or EMR certification.
  • All personnel currently employed, and for future employment, will consent to authorization to release driver’s record information.
  • Any potential action through the State of Idaho on your driving record could/will affect your ability to drive ambulance vehicles. Potential driving action could include: D.U. I., reckless driving, or any potential suspensions due to other driving infractions.

Physical Requirements

Perceive the nature of sounds by the ear, express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word, perceive characteristics of objects through the eyes, extend arms and hands in any direction, seize, hold, grasp, turn, or otherwise work with hands, pick, pinch, or otherwise work with fingers, perceive such attributes of objects or materials as size, shape, temperature, or texture; and stoop, kneel crouch, and crawl. Must be able to lift 25 pounds maximum with frequent lifting, carrying pushing, and pulling of objects weighing up to 10 pounds and continuous walking and standing. Must be able to identify, match, and distinguish colors.
