DEFINITION

The pharmacy technician assists the Pharmacist by filling physician orders for oral, rectal, topical and injectable use; may mix IV admixture solutions as needed using aseptic technique in the Laminar Air Flow Hood; prints labels, prepares, and files charge slips and performs other related duties.

JOB ESSENTIALS

  • Assists the Pharmacist in providing medication, and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians and other hospital staff.
  • Prepares intravenous solutions and admixtures as needed.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and reorders them accordingly.
  • Assists in filling prescriptions.
  • Refills automated dispensing machines.
  • Processes records of medications and supplies dispensed to patients or customers, computes charges and either enters them into the computer or forwards them to Information Systems.
  • Prepares select reports and MARs.
  • Receives and stores incoming deliveries of medication and supplies.
  • Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement and quality improvement activities.
  • Assists the Pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care for patients ranging in age from newborn to the elderly.  Must be able to identify and understand that there are dosage variations between newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, and know to consult with the Pharmacist if any doubts or questions arise.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  • Maintains Pharmacy Services in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Performs other pharmacy-related duties as requested or required.
  • Demonstrates ability to calculate figures and amounts relating to dosage calculations when filing various prescriptions ranging from the newborn to the elderly populations.
  • Demonstrates ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral and diagram form.
  • Demonstrates ability to deal with problems involving several variables in particular situations.
  • Recognizes inappropriate dosing based on available dosage forms for various age groups.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills ensuring that pharmaceutical preparations are sterile, properly packaged, labeled, stored, and not outdated.
  • Ensures compliance with USP <797>.
  • Low-risk compounding:
    • The applicable media-fill test will be performed and passed annually, after the initial training and media-fill test is completed and passed.
    • Gloved Finger Tip Sampling will be completed every 6 months, after the initial training and Gloved Finger Tip is completed and passed.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School diploma or the equivalent.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT)
  • One (1) year related pharmacy experience and/or training or graduate of certified training program/healthcare Careers College.
  • Basic computer knowledge in Electronic Health Records, Excel, and Word.

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience with automated pharmacy systems, IV Laminar Flow Hood or the willingness to learn.

Physical Requirements

Perceive the nature of sounds by the ear, express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word, perceive characteristics of objects through the eyes, extend arms and hands in any direction, seize, hold, grasp, turn, or otherwise work with hands, pick, pinch, or otherwise work with fingers, perceive such attributes of objects or materials as size, shape, temperature, or texture; and stoop, kneel crouch, and crawl. Must be able to lift 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting, carrying pushing, and pulling of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Continuous walking and standing. Must be able to identify, match, and distinguish colors.
